This ancient dance form has it's roots buried in antiquity. No one has determined the exact origins of this form of dance or where exactly it has come from. Some say it goes back to ancient fertility dances, some say it relates to the Mother Goddess. Other claim it's ROM (Gypsy) in origin. There are those who envision concubines dancing for the Sultan or insist that it is a dance for women only. What we do know is that it is old and is a mix of cultural elements. The more recent evolutions are definitely a folk dance of North Africa and the Middle East. The modern nightclub version of the 20th century is what most think of when the term 'belly dance' is spoken. It is a sparkle and glitter rendition of the earthier folk dance. In it's simplest form, it is a dance that can be done by anyone. Showbiz and America have added a certain notoriety for the dance. Despite what a common stereotype portrays, good girls do belly dance...and do it well. |
